What is Emotional Freedom Techniques(EFT) and how can it help me?

The world of therapy has radically changed in recent years. Modern Energy Psychologies combined with conventional Talk Therapy means that we can go beyond the results that traditional counselling had to offer. One of these new techniques is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).

EFT, a tapping technique – is one of the most important breakthroughs in the area of emotional health and well-being in recent times. It’s becoming widespread across the globe and is now being introduced into schools and medical establishments.

It is especially helpful in the treatment of trauma; both PTSD and general life traumas.

How can EFT help me?

Have you ever tried to make changes in your life but then slipped back into old patterns? That’s because your emotions keep you trapped. Maybe it’s fear, or guilt or anger. Perhaps it’s resentment or worries about being abandoned in some way. Maybe you have trauma from past events or struggle to trust in others.

Those unhelpful emotions make it very difficult to overcome problems in life. Issues such as relationship problems, communication, confidence and low self-esteem, inability to succeed at our goals and anxiety and panic attacks. It’s hard to overcome these if we’re in a state of emotional distress about them. When we let go of the emotional struggle around a problem it becomes so much easier to manage.

How does EFT work?

EFT actually works on a number of levels simultaneously.

EFT is a tapping technique that uses some of the same points as acupuncture (but with no needles involved). Tapping on these points helps to free up those trapped emotions. Emotions get trapped when a person has a trauma. Quite often traumas, big and small, happen in childhood

A childhood trauma can be anything from a teacher giving a child a cross look, to parents fighting, to abuse etc. this sets off a pattern of emotional distress that keeps repeating itself into adulthood way

Sometimes a trauma can be events that happen later in life, such as a car accident or a sudden loss.

EFT helps to let go of the trauma by separating out the “emotional charge” from the event itself – you still remember it – it just doesn’t bother you so much anymore

EFT also soothes the Amygdala – the Amygdala is the part of the brain that controls stress, anxiety, fight, flight or freeze. In EFT, whilst tapping, we also use specific spoken words to very quickly “rewire the brain” to make ‘cognitive shifts’ – that is to shift your mental perspective so that you can deal with problems in ways that work better.

How would I have sessions with EFT?

In my experience, I’ve found that EFT works particularly well when used in conjunction with traditional Talk Therapy. And, once you’ve learnt this simple technique, you can take your EFT practice home with you. It’s a lifelong tool to help with any future emotional challenges that come up.
