We all want to have good relationships. The happier our relationships, the more supported, confident and secure we feel. That means we’re more successful at the things we want to achieve in life
However, it’s often the case that our relationships are where we face our greatest challenges. This is because we’re unique human beings who see the world through our own personal lens. Whilst none of us would want to be “controlling” as such, we do have a need to feel some sense of being in command of our own reality. When others don’t do as we want them to do, or as we expect them to do, it’s a jolt – we feel out of control of the situation and want to restore equilibrium. That’s when hurt and conflict happens.
With a little attention, however, our relationships can also be where we do our greatest learning and grow to become wiser and happier. By finding ways to navigate our differences, to express our needs and to be able to understand another’s point of view – well that’s a wonderful thing!
To do this, we need to be able to communicate effectively. In smany years helping clients – individuals and couples – I’ve found that a little attention to communication skills can improve relationship greatly.
