How To Stop Exaggerating!

When we're desperate to be heard by someone, we can often end up resorting to using exaggerated words. We all do this sometimes; it's just human nature.

But have you ever noticed that when you use exaggerated words, it actually makes things worse? It undermines your ability to be heard, contrary to what you wanted, and leaves you feeling powerless and frustrated.

Typical exaggerated words include: always, never, really, no one, should, must, everyone, won't.
For example, saying, 'You never listen to me!'

Change the Habit of Using Exaggerated Words

Changing the habit of using exaggerated words involves replacing them with more realistic alternatives. Words such as: sometimes, occasionally, some people, possibly, may not, could. These are softer, less critical, and will likely offer a more accurate representation of the situation..

For example, saying, 'I sometimes feel frustrated because I feel like I'm not being heard.'

By noticing the exaggerated words and phrases you've been using and substituting them with more realistic ones, you'll feel more empowered. You'll be more likely to be listened to, and your relationships will greatly improve.
